Fun run to support ICAP heating assistance programs

Interlakes Area United Way hosting Heat the Streets 5K

Combine fitness and fun while raising awareness and money for neighbors in need. Interlakes Area United Way (IAUW) is hosting a fun run in April to raise money for residential heating assistance in Lake, Miner and Moody Counties.

Heat the Streets 5K is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 in Madison. Cost is $35 per participant and includes a free t-shirt.

Proceeds will be donated to Inter-Lakes Community Action Partnership (ICAP), a non-profit organization based in Madison that administers a variety of basic needs, children and family and other programs and services in east central South Dakota.

"Lake, Miner and Moody counties all have a respective local fund established through ICAP that helps pay residential utility bills that are past due," said ICAP Community Service Worker Sarah Hock.

Money from Heat the Streets will be divided among the three counties and administered through each ICAP fund, provided to households strictly for heating bill assistance.

"Single dwellers, families, elderly—anyone who has the need may be eligible," Hock said.

Heat the Streets originated in 2017 as a Leadership Madison project, coordinated by participants of the Greater Madison Area Chamber of Commerce program. The group raised over $1,100 and helped with heating bills for five households.

"In life, unexpected or emergency circumstances can occur, and families may be faced with choosing between heating their homes and basic needs like food or medicine," said IAUW President Lori Gustaf. "These past few months have been a harsh reminder of just how severe winter can be in South Dakota, and during those times, no one should be without heat. We hope this event will help make the winter warmer and safer for families in our area."

Children and adults of all ages are encouraged to participate, and the event will be pet and stroller friendly. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m. at the Madison Community Center with the race starting at 9:00 a.m.

Although designated as a fun run, prizes will be awarded for first place male, female and youth (12 and under), donated by FirstLine Funding Group. Other sponsors include East River Electric Power Cooperative and Heartland Consumers Power District.

Registration is open now online at or you can register the morning of. Details are also available at or on IAUW's Facebook page.
